THE experience
ITINERARY:

Cusco – Palccoyo – Cusco
We begin our day with pick-up from the hotel at 5:00 am and begin our drive towards the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain trailhead. Located south of Cusco, we drive for approximately 4 hours in private transport until the trail where we will provide you with a breakfast.
Along the way, we see beautiful Andes mountains as well as lush green valleys, local people working on their land, and hundreds of alpacas and llamas. If we are lucky we will stop for vicuñas and observe them in their natural free state.
When we get to Apacheta, we will begin our hike towards Palcoyo Mountain. After hiking for 10 minutes we get the viewpoint from where you enjoy the first Rainbow Mountain. We take pictures and drink our water. Then we hike for another 10 minutes we get to the second viewpoint where we will take pictures of the second Mountain. Then we hike another 10 minutes to the third viewpoint and you will be impressed by the third mountain. This viewpoint is the place from where you take the classical postcard picture of Palcoyo.
After enjoying the beautiful colorful mountains, we will hike back to the Trailhead.
Then we take the van for about 2 hours until Ttio town where will have our lunch in a local house prepared by our Chef. After enjoying our delicious meal, we drive another 1 hour and a half to Cusco. We will drop you off at your hotel at 05:00 pm roughly.

Stone forest (optional):
If you feel good once you get the third viewpoint, we can hike another 10 minutes to the Stone Forest. You will see beautiful rock formations once you get to the top. The trail is swift and steep. But the view from the top is amazing. You will see Ausangate Mountain in the distance and all 3 Rainbow Mountains. Another good thing to climb is, that you don’t come back by the same trail, you hike in a loop.

Why does it have those colors?
Millions of years ago, Palccoyo’s area was submerged under a shallow sea. During this time, different sediments, such as red clay, sandstone, iron oxide, and copper oxide, were deposited on the seafloor, forming layers of different colors. Millions of years later, tectonic forces caused the uplift of the Andes Mountains, pushing up these layers of sediments.
Rainy season?
Between November and March, the rainy season arrives in the Cusco region, bringing with it fog, hail, or even occasional snowfall. Although the weather can be unpredictable, this time of year also has its charm: the mountain displays more vivid and saturated colors thanks to the moisture, and the number of visitors drops significantly. If you’re lucky with the weather, you could enjoy a truly magical experience.
Dry season?
Between April and October, the dry season. This means clearer skies and better visibility of the Andean landscape, which is ideal for photography lovers. Weather conditions are more predictable and favorable for exploring the mountain, with no risk of unexpected rain. The trails are also in better condition—drier and safer—making the hike to Palccoyo even more enjoyable.
Dietary needs?
We take care any dietary restrictions on our Palcoyo day trip. Many people who are vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, or have other food allergies or intolerances have joined us before. Please tell us your specific needs ahead of time!
Cost For Photos?
There are local people in the area wearing traditional clothing. If you want to take a picture with them and their llamas, they usually expect a tip of 5 soles (about $2). This small amount helps give them some extra income.
Are There Any Age Restrictions For The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour?
The Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain tour does not have any age limits. However, suggests that children be at least 6 years old because younger children often have a hard time with the cold and can get sick from the high altitude. If you want to take your child to Rainbow Mountain, it is a good idea to dress them warmly and arrive in Cusco at least three days before the tour so they can get used to the altitude.
On the other hand, We had people between the ages of 50 and 65 who were active and healthy. We recommend using a private service so you can travel to Palcoyo Mountain at your own pace.
Do You Include The Red Valley On Your Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour?
Yes, we visit the Red Valley during our Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain day trip, but it is optional. If you’re feeling tired, you can skip the Red Valley and go back to the beginning of the trail.
What to bring to the Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain?
Clothing:
– Layers of clothing: Dress in layers to adapt to temperature changes. Start with light clothing for the beginning of the hike and bring warmer layers for the summit, where it can be cold and windy.
– Waterproof jacket: Rain or snow can appear anytime in the mountains, so a waterproof jacket is crucial to keep you dry and comfortable.
– Hiking boots: Proper footwear protects your feet and provides stability on uneven terrain. Choose sturdy, waterproof, and well-fitting hiking boots.
Accesories:
Small backpack: Carry a small backpack to store your essential belongings during the hike.
– Water bottle: Carry enough water to Stay hydrated throughout the hike. A reusable bottle is ideal for reducing environmental impact.
– Sunscreen: UV rays are stronger at higher altitudes, so protecting your skin with high-factor sunscreen is essential.
– Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the sun and wind with good-quality sunglasses.
– Camera: Capture your adventure’s stunning landscapes and unforgettable moments with a camera.
– Toilet paper: An essential item often overlooked. Make sure to bring enough toilet paper for your personal use.
– Hat or cap: Protect your head from the sun and cold with a hat or cap.
– Gloves: Keep your hands warm in cold weather with gloves.
– Snacks: Keep your energy levels up with light and nutritious snacks like dried fruits, energy bars, or nuts.
– Rain poncho: A lightweight and compact rain poncho will protect you from unexpected rain or snow.
– Identification: Remember to bring your ID for any eventuality.

- Sunscreen and hat: The sun is intense at high altitudes, so protecting yourself from the sun is essential.
- Water and snacks: It is essential to bring enough water and snacks for the hike.
- Cash: There may not be ATMs in the area, so it is advisable to bring cash.
