TRIP DETAILS

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado to Amazon Jungle

Your adventure starts with a transfer from Puerto Maldonado to the hotel in Puerto Maldonado for a brief stop where you will be provided with a duffle bag to pack essentials for the jungle adventure at the lodge (2 nights) and store large luggage.

The trip to the jungle lodge is initially by land vehicle, this road ends in a small port where you will embark on a covered motorised boat and enjoy your box lunch with scenic views. 

During the journey we will have the opportunity to observe various bird species, hopefully families of capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, alligators and other wildlife. The Tambopata Rainforest area holds the world record for the most bird sightings in one area.
Arrive at the lodge, reception by the local staff, you will be shown to your room. Time to unwind and relax or explore the surroundings.

Included activity: Introductory Nocturnal Walk
Grab your flashlight and join a naturalist guide to discover what is around the lodge grounds. Your guide will help you understand rainforest ecosystems and see and listen to the nocturnal wildlife, keep an eye for insects, bats, frogs, and perhaps some occasional encounter with a nocturnal mammal. 

After your Wildlife Night Walk with a naturalist guide, return to the lodge for dinner. Enjoy the diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany our first night in the Amazon.

Day 2: Amazon Jungle
Included activity: Macaw Clay Lick Visit
Rise early to start the journey upstream to the Macaw Clay Lick ‘El Chuncho’ in the Tambopata National Reserve. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful natural sceneries and wildlife of the riverbanks. At our arrival, if weather permits, we will observe one of the greatest wildlife spectacles where hundreds of parrots and different species of macaws gather to eat clay. We will have breakfast while we wait for the macaws to arrive. 
Included activity: Wildlife spotting by boat
Halfway through the morning we will return to the lodge. This river route goes through the Tambopata National Reserve offering the best chance to watch wildlife in the region. This part of the Amazon is known for animals such as capybaras, giant otters, tapirs, monkeys and with luck other mammals, keep your eyes peeled.
Free time:
At your arrival, you can relax in the hammocks or have the chance to swim in the Tambopata River. Those who want, can join the guide for fishing in a habitat that contains more than 250 species of fish. Then lunch will be served.
Included activity: Ethno Botanical Walk
Learn more about the jungle, join a naturalist guide for a walk that will teach extensively about the flora of the area and how they integrate with the ecosystem. You will find out about medicinal plants and other uses that the native communities give them. Walk through the Amazon forest to see palm trees, sacred lupuna trees, hollow trees inhabited by ants and more. 
Included activity: Nocturnal Caiman Search
At nightfall, we embark the motorised boat again to make a nocturnal caiman search. Enjoy learning about caimans from the expert guide, try to spot them hiding on the muddy banks of the river.

Day 3: Amazon Jungle to Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast we will make a trip by boat and land vehicle to Puerto Maldonado, once in the town you have some free time to relax and enjoy a tasty lunch. 

After lunch, we will leave and cruise the Madre de Dios riveruntil we reach the trail that leads to Sandoval lake where you will board a canoe to paddle around the lake enjoying the beauty of the landscape and observing the wildlife, such as kingfishers, herons, hoatzins (unique pre-historic looking birds), monkeys, etc. If we are lucky, we could see the family of giant otters which live at the lake.

If you are a nature lover, then you cannot miss this beautiful place for anything. Sandoval Lake is the largest oxbow lake in Peru. Sandoval Lake’s environment makes it an extremely attractive area, due to a high abundance of Mauritia palm trees, which form swampy areas called aguajales. These trees create a fantastic backdrop to the lake and provide habitat for a number of different animals and plants but the lake is also home to giant Amazon fish called Arapaima, black caiman, and a resident family of one of the most endangered species of mammals in South America: giant river otters.
You can also enjoy spotting titi monkeys, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, tamarins and howler monkeys. 
The bird life to be seen at Sandoval Lake is also fantastic. Enjoy spotting macaws, cormorants, toucans, a diversity of herons, and hoatzin. 

As the sun begins to set we will initiate our walk back and then cruise back to the hotel. 

After dinner you will be able to rest or enjoy the pool and its cascade surrounded by verdant vegetation.
Rest of the night free to enjoy the nightlife of this welcoming city.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • The Amazon Jungle can be very hot and humid, so it’s important to drink plenty of water and wear light cotton clothing. Make sure you also bring tropical-strength insect repellent. 
  • The included activities and transfers will operate on a join-in basis, which means that you could have others joining you along the way. If you would prefer to travel in a group with a dedicated Trip Leader, just get in touch with your booking agent and they will take you through some alternatives.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  1. This trip is advertised as a “Trip Extension”, which means you are not accompanied by a Local Tour Leader – a local naturalist guide in the Amazon and our local representative in Lima fills this role – and the configuration of the group might change. The trip will run at a minimum of 2 travelers but other independent travelers might join the group in the jungle lodge and activities.
  2. Please provide your full name exactly as per passport at the time of booking (including any middle names listed on your passport). Fees may apply for amendments to details within 45 days of departure. 
  3. Please note that the flights to/from Puerto Maldonado are in very high demand, if you book too close to departure this means that flight prices might have increased considerably in which case a surcharge will apply.

What is the jungle lodge and the rooms like?

The lodge has 19 bungalows designed with local architecture and built with materials from the area, most of them have river views and jungle views otherwise.

The common areas are composed by 2 open terraces overlooking the Tambopata River.

There is also a view point with hammocks in the second floor and a wide dining hall that can be used as a conference room ideal for workshops and courses. Between the facilities there are lush gardens with wild flowers, trees and tropical fruits.

The rooms have aprox. 35m2 and all of them have private bathrooms and mosquito nets.

What are the included meals like?

The menu is fixed and specific plates are assigned for each day.
Every meal has a starter, main dish, dessert and beverage.
The menu is healthy, balanced and made with local products (some from our own plantations).

There are vegetarian and vegan options for those who wish it, you can request it in the reservation notes.

Is there electricity in the Amazon jungle?

The energy at the lodge is supplied entirely by solar panels. They provide enough energy to have lights the 24hours in the rooms and common areas.

Electronic devices charging however are limited to two periods of time per day: From 11am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm.

What are the services offered by the jungle lodge?
